Top NFL Prospects, 2007-2011

Below are my rankings for the 2007 Draft at the QB position, with projections on where they will go.  Also included are my rankings for the 2008-2011 drafts.

Top QB Prospects, 2007 Draft

1. Brady Quinn-Notre Dame: NFL-ready passer should land in the Top 5 of the first round.

2. Trent Edwards-Stanford: Look for the strong-armed Cardinals QB to get more National media attention after a breakthrough 2005 season, leading to an early first-round selection.

3. Troy Smith-Ohio State: Multi-faceted QB drawing inevitable comparisons with Vince Young could land as early as the Top 5, and will not get past the first round.

4. Sam Keller-Arizona State: Talented-passer could be late first-round pick if he beats out Rudy Carpenter for the Sun Devils job. Even if he sits, he’ll probably land around the 3rd round.

5. John Beck-BYU: One of the best pure-passers in the country, a huge season in 2006 could land in the early first round. Otherwise, he won’t slip past the second round.

6. Drew Stanton-Michigan St.: Very athletic QB with a strong-arm, Stanton has an outside chance at the Heisman trophy as well as landing in the first-round.

7. Drew Tate-Iowa: The heart-and-soul of the Hawkeyes. Questions about his arm-strength could emerge as April approaches. Won’t get past the early 3rd round.

8. Jordan Palmer-UTEP: Has the physical tools to be a first-round, but must cut down on interceptions in 2006. Should be a first-day draft pick.

9. Tyler Palko-Pittsburgh: An improved season could propel him into the late first-round; has Top-10 First Round potential.

10. John Stocco-Wisconsin: Could see his stock rise if the Badgers liberalize their offense. Has an NFL-caliber arm.

11. Luke Getsy-Akron: Solid passer who led the Zips to their first ever bowl game last year. Another good season could see him go as a steal in the third round.

12. Chris Leak-Florida: Has first-round potential, but has struggled with inconsistent coaching early in his career, and the spread offense last year. Should develop into a good NFL Quarterback.

13. Brett Ratliff-Utah: Concerns about his size could rise if he beats out Brian Johnson for the starting job. Has a very strong arm and quick release; lots of upside and could be a late-round or free agent steal if he sits on the bench this year.

14. Zac Taylor-Nebraska: Saw breakthrough season in 2005 as he finally adapted to the West-Coast offense late in the year. Concerns about his arm-strength will send him to the late-third or early-fourth round.

15. Steven Moffett-UCF: Needs another stellar season to solidify his draft status. Has the arm, but needs to improve his accuracy.

16. Phil Horvath-N. Illinois: Should be picked early on the second day if he beats out Dan Nicholson for the starting job.

17. Kevin Kolb-Houston: Very productive four-year starter. One of the smartest players in the nation. Operated a very unique offense in college, will be a project for any team.

18. Bryan Cupito-Minnesota: Had a very much improved 2005. Could transcend just being an efficient passer as the Gophers lack a brand-name runningback for the first time in years.

19. Kole McKamey-New Mexico: Could land in the late-fourth early-fifth round if he improves his passing accuracy. Also a good runner when out of the pocket.

20. James Pinkney-E. Carolina: Gifted and athletic passer who could be first-day selection if he can lead the Pirates to a bowl.

21. Sam Hollenbach-Maryland: Tall passer who took over the Terrapins offense in late 2005. Mid-second day selection if he continues to improve, with his limited experience.

22. Jeff Rowe-Nevada: Athletic passer with a strong arm and good feet. Operates the unconventional "Pistol" offense. Will need good coaching to help him adapt to NFL offenses.

23. Jeff Ballard-TCU: An appearance in a BCS bowl would boost his draft status immensely. Figures now to be approximately a sixth round pick.

24. Steve Wichman-Idaho: Strong-armed passer from smaller school could sneak into the 4th or 5th season if improvement in consistency is demonstrated in 2006. Lots of potential.

25. Josh Padrick-FIU: Good quarterback from one of the weakest programs in 1-A. Will be a steal in the 6th to 7th rounds.

26. Tim Brasic-Illinois: Could sneak into 7th round with a breakthrough season under Ron Zook.

27. Clint Marks-MTSU: Lanky passer is one of the more accurate passers in the country. A good season and a Sun Belt title could see him go in the 7th round.

28. Matt Moore-Oregon St.: One of the most inconsistent QB’s in the country last year.  Needs a big year to garner serious consideration from NFL scouts.

Top Draft Eligible Juniors likely to enter draft.

1. JaMarcus Russell-LSU: One of the strongest arms in the country. Top 10 talent. Could enter draft with two top prospects at his heels.

2. Brian Brohm-Louisville: Prototypical NFL-passer whose knee injury is the only major question on his resume. Should be a first-round lock.

3. Chad Henne-Michigan: A Big 10 Title could see the Junior pursue the NFL early. Will be a borderline first-round pick as a Junior.

4. Brandon Cox-Auburn: A BCS berth or a National Championship could result in the lefty passer entering early. Will likely be a 3rd round pick.
